The client is a national group purchasing and cooperative procurement organization that helps businesses access purchasing benefits and resources through a shared platform.

Its digital operations depend on WordPress websites that need regular content updates, including pages, posts, media, and other website elements. As the team explored AI-assisted content management, it needed a way to connect AI tools with WordPress without weakening the access controls already in place.

Project Brief

The client wanted its team to use Claude as an AI assistant for routine WordPress content management.

The idea was not to give AI unrestricted access. Each employee already had a defined WordPress role, such as Editor, Contributor, or Administrator. The requirement was to make Claude operate within those same boundaries.

In other words, if a person could perform an action in WordPress, Claude could help them perform it. If that person could not perform the action, Claude should not be able to perform it either.

The solution also needed clear visibility into AI activity, secure authentication, the ability to revoke individual access, and a practical way to manage permissions across the client’s WordPress sites.

Key Challenges That Had to Be Addressed

The challenge was not simply connecting an AI assistant to WordPress. The real challenge was connecting AI without creating a new security door around the existing permission model.

AI access did not follow WordPress roles: The client’s initial AI connector allowed access based on the connection itself rather than the role of the person behind it.
An Editor could potentially reach admin-level actions: An Editor’s AI connection could access functions that the same person could not access through the normal WordPress admin interface.
Existing permission boundaries were not being carried over: WordPress already had roles and capabilities in place, but those rules did not automatically apply to the AI connection.

There was limited visibility into AI-driven changes: The team could not clearly distinguish changes made by a person through wp-admin from changes made during an AI session.
The client needed individual control: If one person’s AI access needed to be removed, the team needed a way to revoke that person’s access without disrupting everyone else’s work.
The permission model needed to stay easy to understand: The client needed more than a verbal assurance that AI access was restricted. It needed a visible, enforceable access model.

Solutions We Implemented

Engineering experts at Sigma Infosolutions built the solution around WordPress, which should remain the authority on who can do what. Instead of creating a separate permission system for AI, the Sigma MCP Connector extends the client’s existing WordPress authorization model to Claude..

OAuth 2.0 with PKCE: Claude connects through a secure OAuth authorization flow rather than receiving a WordPress password or a long-lived API key.
User-based authorization: Each team member signs in with their own WordPress account and approves access through a consent screen.
Role-scoped access tokens: Claude receives a scoped, revocable token tied to that user’s existing WordPress role.
Capability-level checks: The connector includes 27 role-aware tools covering areas such as posts, pages, media, taxonomies, menus, ACF fields, post metadata, and users.

Permission checks on every tool call: Each action is checked against the relevant WordPress capability instead of trusting the initial connection alone.
Live role access matrix: The access matrix is generated from the site’s actual WordPress roles and is shown consistently across the connection, documentation, and consent experiences.
Per-role rate limiting: Request limits can be configured by role to help prevent an AI loop or unexpected behavior from overwhelming the website.
Detailed activity logging: OAuth and tool activity can be tracked through a filterable audit trail, including before-and-after snapshots for content changes.
Individual token revocation: Access for one user can be revoked without forcing the entire team to disconnect.

The result was a much cleaner model, where the AI did not get its own special set of permissions. It worked within the permissions of the person who authorized it.

For the client, the value went beyond simply making WordPress accessible through Claude. The project created a safer and more manageable way to introduce AI into everyday website operations.

No admin passwords shared with AI: Team members authorize their own accounts, while Claude receives scoped access instead of credentials.
Existing WordPress roles remain meaningful: The organization did not have to create an entirely separate permission structure for AI.
Lower risk of excessive AI access: An Editor’s AI session stays within the capabilities available to that Editor.
Better accountability: Teams can review AI-related OAuth and tool activity and see what changed.

Faster content operations: Employees can use AI for routine WordPress work without turning every small update into a developer task.
Simpler access management: Individual access can be revoked without affecting other users.
More confidence in AI adoption: Instead of treating AI as a privileged system account, the organization could treat it more like an extension of the user’s existing access.
A reusable security pattern: The solution was released as a free public WordPress.org plugin, allowing other WordPress organizations to address the same AI authorization challenge.
